Autologous fat transfer also called free fat injection or fat grafting is a procedure that uses the patient’s own fat tissue to increase the volume of fat and improve contours in another part of the body. The fat used in the transfer is harvested from one part of the body where there is excess amount through a liposuction procedure, most commonly taken from the abdomen, trunk and/or thighs. The fat removed is washed and prepared to obtain the fat with the best consistency for grafting. It is then placed in another part of the body where additional bulk is desired. Fat is most commonly transferred to the face, breast and buttocks (Brazilian butt lift). Often patients have a great interest in using their own fat to improve other areas of the body.
