Autologous fat transfer, also called free fat injections or fat grafting, is a procedure that uses the patient’s own fat tissue to increase the volume of fat and improve contours in another part of the body. The fat used in the transfer is harvested by liposuction from parts of the body where there is an excess amount, most commonly the abdomen, trunk or thighs. The harvested fat is washed and prepared to obtain the fat with the best consistency for grafting. It is then placed in another part of the body where additional bulk is desired. Fat is most commonly transferred to the face, breasts and buttocks (Brazilian butt lift). Often, patients have a great interest in using their own fat to improve other areas of their body.
